About David Lee

David is an award winning watercolor impressionist who paints landscape and figure, his style is loose, bold and spontaneous. David’s goal is to capture a moment in time that may invoke feeling and interest from viewers. He paints atmosphere, light and the moment, not subjects, he says. David pursued photography as a hobby for two decades while earning his living in insurance management business. When he retired in 2002, he got back to painting with a vengeance, amassing over 50 awards. In recent years David has painted different American cities and foreign countries including Paris and New York City. He participated in the NYC Bryant Park juried artists in residence program. He was one of four artists who painted outdoor activities in the mid-town parks, subject matters included Public Library, many statues and concerts, carrousel as well as people. David’s paintings are included in the Bryant Park’s permanent art collection. David participated in the Vichy, France art residency for three weeks representing America along with five other artists, painting French Countryside and Paris. David’s art works has been shown in prestigious institutions such as Allentown Art Museum, Bethlehem City Hall, Banana Factory, Lehigh University through group shows as well as solo shows. For David, painting is just another way of keeping a diary. David started using a brush at an early age. He starts copying the Chinese characters by painting over them, without getting over the lines. As he matured, he paints over the lines in watercolor without regards for any rules and restriction. This is the beginning of painting loose, bold and spontaneous. As I work, he says, more of my past experiences emerge in one piece. The knowledge gained in his life time is all presented in each of his paintings. Years of practice and experiment have allowed him to produce work that is lacking of great detail but still retains enough representational imagery for the viewer to connect the dots. As a youngster, David took classes in The Art Students League in 1969, and then again in 1973. Two of his instructors were Mario Cooper and Gustav Rehberger, top artists and illustrators at the time. Dave said “Learning to see, from my teacher, Mr. Gilbert, was an invaluable lesson for me when I was in high school. Although I have not painted for more than twenty years, my eyes never ceased to see and observe”. Born in China, David arrived in the Lehigh Valley Pennsylvania by way of Hong Kong and New York City. In recent years, David has been painting from the East coast to the West. David has been painting New York City street scenes for years and then Pennsylvania rural scenes. In the last two years, David has been painting the Southeast.
