HOW THE MAYNARD DIXON LEGACY MUSEUM SUCCEEDED IN A YEAR OF UNCERTAINTY
In 2019, during preparations for my May 2020 show at the Maynard Dixon Legacy Museum, “Beauty of the Southwest – An Amazing Journey by Robert Goldman”, neither I nor Paul and Susan Bingham had any idea that 2020 would be fraught with severe personal and national challenges.
In early 2020, Paul Bingham told me he had a rare form of cancer which required surgery and extensive follow-up treatment. This very disturbing news was quickly followed by alarming reports that Covid19 was rapidly becoming a global pandemic. This news drastically impacted our plans for my show scheduled for May 2020 at the Maynard Dixon Legacy Museum. Events already planned had to be cancelled, including a special dinner at the gallery for thirty art collectors from the Salt Lake City area, and the formal opening reception.
Between his fatiguing cancer treatments in Salt Lake City, Paul continued developing new strategies and approaches to marketing the May 2020 show. Detailed flyers were circulated to gallery patrons and regular postings to social media sites kept the public informed about the many wonderful paintings in the show.
The museum instituted strict health safety protocols including sanitizing, mask wearing and social distancing and remained opened. A May informal open house was announced, and I continued to paint. Travel during this time was challenging since many motels, restaurants, convenience stores and some gas stations were closed. In April as the time approached to deliver my paintings to the Maynard Dixon Legacy Museum, Utah officials announced they intended to close the state borders to nonresidents to curtail spread of Covid19. This made it doubtful we could even get the paintings to the Gallery. Fortunately, this restriction was soon lifted.
Despite the intensely severe restrictions, forty-five paintings sold, making the show a satisfying success. Best of all, Paul learned he was cancer free! Additional good news and a great honor to me was being selected to become a Signature Member of the prestigious Plein Air Painters of America organization, which is comprised of many outstanding artists.
Even though travel remained difficult, in early November 2020 a window of good weather made it possible to visit and gather images for my upcoming show titled “The Iconic Southwest Landscapes of Robert Goldman”. Paintings in this show depict these stunningly beautiful locations: Bryce Canyon, Escalante Grand Staircase, Boulder, Hell’s Backbone Bridge, Grosvenor Arch, Capitol Reef, Canyon Lands and Arches National Park.
For the May 21, 2021, at the Maynard Dixon Legacy Museum all health protocols will be in place and we look forward to seeing you. For your convenience, the show will also be available online.
A special thank you to Paul and Susan Bingham, and all the friends and collectors who help make events like this possible.
