About David Griffin

Painting is more than a vocation,''My paintings are direct observations, results of a life and heritage spent close to the Land, the People, the West. It's a calling to satisfy a deep desire to speak in a visual medium, telling stories; all the time looking West" My ability to portray these subjects is not without it's own struggle. Painting is hard work, but I'm committed to improving my ability to communicate the story in a passionate way, with honesty and vitality that the subject deserves. Although the American cowboy is not the only subject I enjoy painting, I am satisfied that I value God's gift in whatever stage I'm in,and that my purpose is to be the best steward of that gift I can be. Born in 1952, David grew up in Lubbock,Texas. After studying Fine Art at Texas Tech University, he was invited to attend the first Illustrators Workshop New York, where for two years he studied with Bernie Fuchs, Mark English, and Bob Peak. His work was recognized many times by the Illustrators Annual national show during the 1970-80's In 1985, he began to devote full time to painting professionally, sharing a studio with Bart Forbes for the next 10 years. He also studied with Bettina Steinke and James Reynolds. In addition to having his work featured in magazines articles including Cowboys and Indians, Victoria, Dallas Morning News, WesternArt Collector, Southwest Art ( cover and feature Oct.2013) and corporate collections, David has been invited to participate in these nationally recognized shows: American Art Classic; Renaissance Show and Sale, Texas Art Gallery Collectors Sale, Settler’s West Gallery,Oil Painters of America Exhibit (Award of Excellence), Salon International ( jury top 50 Award); Coors National Western Art Exhibit and Sale 2010-2015 National Ranching Heritage Museum, Texas Tech University,Two-man exhibit,2012.

Maynard Dixon Camp Out

SHOW CONTINUES....................................

The Dixon Camp Out is much more than just an art show. In fact, it's not really an art "show" at all. This event is a gathering of artists, collectors, community, and friends who love art.

The guiding principles of the event are two fold: we want to help artists in America and we want to ensure the viability of historic preservation. We are deeply connected to the art of Maynard Dixon and his contributions to American art. But rather than focusing solely on the beloved paintings of Maynard Dixon, we focus on the "art spirit" and intention of Maynard Dixon, the artist, poet, and whole person. In choosing to remember Dixon this way, we believe his legacy becomes even more meaningful when it is illuminated by the artists who are living and making art in 2017.

The camp out is one of our major fundraising events to support the Thunderbird Foundation for the Arts. In bringing serious collectors to this event, we help the artists on the forefront of American art continue to thrive, and we fulfill our mission for historic preservation. All art sales from Dixon Country Camp Out directly fund the artists as well as the annual operating budget of the Thunderbird Foundation for the Arts and the Maynard Dixon Living History Museum.
