About the Foundation
The Thunderbird Foundation for the Arts is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization furthering Maynard Dixon's legacy by preserving his Utah property and educating the public about his contributions to American art through educational tours of his home, internships for working artists, workshops and artist retreats in addition to workshops and day camps for people with special needs.
The Thunderbird Foundation for the Arts is working to expand its mission to achieve the following long-term goals:
1) Establish a major regional art center known as the Maynard Dixon Museum of Art.
The Maynard Dixon Museum of Art would feature representational works on display by Maynard Dixon and his circle as well as Milford Zornes and his circle. In addition, the museum would feature fine art created by notable contemporary artists who capture this region’s unique subject matter. It is the Foundation’s hope that an art center of this kind would provide a unique point of view for the region as it relates to western American art history and the influence that Dixon had on so many of his contemporaries.
The art center would be a hub for art-related activities including workshops, education, art lectures, film screenings, retreats, and all things involved with the process of making and presenting art.
The Foundation is also deeply committed to boosting the local economy by encouraging more tourism, and the ability to provide jobs for the local community.
The Maynard Dixon Museum would also be available for private individuals and businesses to host meetings, weddings, and other special events.
2) Secure a Legacy Endowment for the Preservation of the Dixon Home, Studio and Memorial site.
Over the next five years, the Foundation would like to establish a legacy endowment to assure that the Dixon property and memorial (burial) site is preserved in perpetuity.
