Special Needs Program

California painter Charles Muench paints Orderville local, Dell Tait.
Since 1999, the Thunderbird Foundation for the Arts has been committed to preserving Maynard Dixon's legacy by providing an official artist retreat program. The Maynard Dixon home and studio has become an important destination for visiting artists wishing to partake of the beauty and spirit of Southern Utah where great painters and sculptors, writers and photographers have come for retreats and convivial inspiration for over seventy years.
The Foundation encourages emerging, as well as established artists to apply. Artists are welcome to apply as a group, or individually. It is anticipated that the majority of the applicant's principle areas of interest will be painting, drawing, sculpting and photography. Our program is designed to provide ample working space and inspirational settings where an artist may work free from the distractions and responsibilities of day-to-day life, and to create relationships with other working artists.
It is the Foundation's intention to have the artist return home having been productive in creating his or her work, with inspiration for future works, and that the overall experience will be one that is cherished for a lifetime.
Non-artist spouses, children and pets are not allowed. There are no exceptions to this rule.
No meals are provided, but restaurants and grocery stores are conveniently located in the nearby towns of Orderville and Mt. Carmel. In certain cases the kitchen in the main home may be used. This is a fragile and historic place. Our expectation is that it be treated in that manner. Daily tours of the property occur. Our expectation is that things be kept clean and tidy at all times.
There is a $50 per person cleaning fee required for all participants staying in the bunkhouse, home or studio. This applies also to individuals parked or camped on the property and using the facilities and wireless internet. This may be paid upon arrival or in advance. There is also a $50 processing fee for groups sponsoring workshops at the time the application is submitted.
Download the application here. Upon approval, your visit will be added to our
Interactive Activities Calendar. Please note that during the week of Maynard Dixon Country, no artist visits will be approved.
